The Inaugural Margaret Mary Jonas Memorial Scholarships for 2017 a Huge Success

On June 25th, the DTDC  celebrated our students and educators at the Delaware Twp Democratic Club's Scholarship Luncheon. The scholarship winners  are:

Vanessa Paolella,  Delaware Valley High School
Jenna Reich, Dingman Delaware Middle School
Morgan Frey, Dingmans Delaware Elementary School
Inessa Martin, Dingman Delaware Primary School

Dr. Cheryl Glenn, the club’s chairperson, expressed appreciation to everyone who attended and made the afternoon possible.  “Attendees at the luncheon were extremely generous,” said Glenn, “and donations are still coming in.  We cannot thank enough all of those who supported this effort. Delaware Twp. businesses went the extra mile in support of our children and their education”.  The raffling of the Scholarship Quilt, donated by Dr. Glenn, and a silent auction of goods and services donated by DTDC members and area businesses provided the base for the successful outcome.

The DTDC Scholarship program awarded 4 scholarships for the 2017 school year. Vanessa Paolella, Delaware Valley Class of 2017, received the $500.00 High School Scholarship and will be attending Bates College in the fall.  In order to be considered for the award, Vanessa was required to write an essay of no less than 750 words on “The repeal of Glass-Steagall and the banking failure of 2007-2008”.  The Moving-Up Scholarships, which are comprised of the remaining 3 awards, were presented to Jenna Reich, a student at Ding-Del Middle School, who was awarded a $150.00 scholarship and Morgan Frey, a student at Dingman Delaware Elementary School and Inessa Martin, a student at Dingman Delaware Primary School, who were awarded $50.00 scholarships each. As the scholarships imply, all students will be “moving up” to the next school level in the fall. Pike County Commissioner Steve Guccini presented the awards to all of the scholarship recipients.

Drawing on the theme of the luncheon, “Perseverance equals success”, the keynote speaker, Mayor Sean Strub of Milford spoke eloquently of his experiences as an AIDS survivor and the need of all of us to be involved and engaged in the education of our young people, that they should always persevere and never give up.

Our club’s success in this endeavor is also owed to the Failte! Restaurant owners and staff who provided a wonderful meal and great service throughout the afternoon.

Many thanks and appreciation also to the hard work of the 2017 DTDC Scholarship Committe: Steven Deslandes-Chair, Leila Hazou-Vice Chair and members Karen Deslandes and Arrgenia (Genie) Seymore.
